We offer a variety of training programs that offer workers the tools to succeed by providing skills and customer service training, Vocational ESL classes, skills upgrades, vocational classes and “bridge training” to move participants into entry-level jobs, and then a career.

Hospitality – LAX Worker

This 18-hour course focuses on the art of customer service, mainly in food and beverage establishments, such as the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), luxury hotels, restaurants, event venues and movie studio cafeterias.  It consists of three 6-hour modules: Customer Service training, Server training, and the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe Food Handler Certification. The course prepares participants for customer service-oriented positions including, server, host, cashier, fast food attendant, utility worker and busser. Barista

This 42-hour course focuses on the history, preparation, and service of coffee, and it includes the 18-hour LAX – Hospitality Worker training. The course consists of three 6-hour modules: Customer Service training, Server training, and the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe Food Handler Certification training and 24-hours of Barista Training. It incorporates both lecture and hands-on training. This training will prepare participants for barista positions that are available at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and other hotel properties. Enrollment into this training is based on passing a pre-requisite class with our lead barista instructor. Trainees must be able and willing to taste coffee. Directors of Food & Beverage, Executive Chefs, Human Resources Directors and Managers, and Supervisors from our employer partners have the opportunity to meet and interview participants before the end of the program, and extend job offers. Bartender Program

Culinary – Line Cook Apprenticeship Program

The Culinary (Line Cook – Chef de Partie) apprenticeship is a 168-hour, front-loaded curriculum that covers the first semester of culinary school condensed into a fast-paced, 8-week program, followed by a minimum of 1,000-hours in a “competency-based” apprenticeship model. The course prepares workers for culinary positions in a variety of kitchens at hotels, restaurants, and airport concessions. Enrollment into this apprenticeship is based on passing two pre-requisite classes, kitchen math and knife cuts, and two interviews with HTA staff and management. Directors of Food & Beverage, Executive Chefs, Human Resources Directors and Managers, and Supervisors from our employer partners have the opportunity to meet and interview participants before the end of the program, and extend job offers. Upon completion of the Culinary Apprenticeship program, apprentices are able to:

• Practice standards in work attitude and deportment expected of industry professionals within a group work environment
• Identify basic kitchen utensils, measuring devices and equipment associated with the culinary profession
• Comprehend culinary terminology as they use standardized recipes for menu production with quantity conversion
• Perform precise classical knife skills, and proper preparation techniques to clean and cook food items for maximum yield
• List and describe the method of food preparation for stocks, thickeners, foundational/derivative sauces, and soups
• Demonstrate knowledge and the ability to fabricate poultry, beef, pork, fish, seafood, and shellfish
• Prepare and apply major cooking techniques for various cuts of meat, poultry, fish, and seafood, vegetables, fruits, and starches
• Prepare and apply the basics of breakfast cookery, including knowledge of eggs, breakfast meats, and breakfast starches
• Demonstrate an ability to set up a buffet line for service

Room Attendant – Housekeeper 5-Week Apprenticeship Program

The Room Attendant/Housekeeper apprenticeship is a 153-hour, front-loaded 5-week curriculum, followed by a minimum of 1,000-hours in a “competency-based” apprenticeship model. The course prepares workers for housekeeping positions in upscale hotels. Enrollment into this apprenticeship is based on passing two interviews with HTA staff and management. Human Resources Directors, Housekeeping Managers, and Supervisors from our employer partners have the opportunity to meet and interview participants before the end of the program, and extend job offers. Upon completion from the Room Attendant program, apprentices are able to:

• Practice standards in work attitude, understand expectations of employers and employ the skills necessary to satisfy and exceed those expectations
• Identify basic cleaning tools, linens and amenities and prepare the linen cart before service
• Understand green initiatives and eco-friendly chemical cleaners
• Know how to enter a room following hotel policy
• Assess and respond to different types of cleaning needs, damage, missing items or illegal items
• Understand which protective personal equipment (PPE) is necessary for each task
• Understand OSHA regulations and follow safe practices when dealing with sharp objects, chemical cleaners, and bloodborne pathogens
• Develop safe ergonomic practices related to specific work tasks
• Understand different types of communication and appropriate etiquette for guest interactions
• Demonstrate the ability to clean 14 rooms in one shift and evaluate the room during the final walkthrough

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER (ELL) – PREP COOK TRAINING (108 HOURS)

This class is taught over the period of 18 days and prepares participants to work in hotel banquet departments, supermarket deli departments and with other employers as an entry-level Prep Cook. Participants will learn kitchen safety and sanitation, allergen safety, safe and efficient ergonomics, knife safety & knife skills, COVID prevention, salad, vinaigrette, salad dressing and sandwich production, kitchen math and measurements; fruit, vegetable, and sliced cheese and meat platter production; and buffet set-up. Speed drills encourage students to work quickly, safely and efficiently. Participants will also gain computer, resume-writing and interview skills through hands-on training and will learn the basics of applying for jobs, customer service, and teamwork and will understand how diversity in the workplace creates an improved work environment. At the same time, work-related ESL training will help prepare the participants for interactions with their customers and colleagues within the workplace. Vocational ESL

In partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE), we offer a Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Class for hospitality careers. This class takes place 4 days a week, for 3-hours a day. Students who participate in this class will learn American workplace culture, conversational ESL and technical skills for entry-level position at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as well as hotels. Additionally, students also receive assistance with resume writing, interview skills to help build their confidence to get a job. Individuals interested in taking this Vocational ESL class must also be enrolled with a participating LAUSD DACE campus and pass two interviews with HTA staff.
